Scientific Integrity is an Oxymoron: Bad ‘science’ from Harvard
By Rich Kozlovich
Today the American Council on Science and Health posted an article in their Medical &Pharmaceuticals section entitled, Bad ‘science’ from Harvard. The article starts out saying that;
“It isn’t very often that a world-renowned, respected teaching facility, such as Harvard University’s Brigham and Women’s hospital, publicly apologizes for promoting bad research — but that is exactly what they did. The so-called study, led by Dr. Eva Schernhammer and her team of researchers at Brigham and Women’s hospital, concluded that those who drink a daily diet soda sweetened with aspartame could have an increased risk of leukemia, lymphoma or non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Aspartame, an artificial sweetener, is an ingredient in some 6,000 products, especially diet soda. Despite literally hundreds of human and animal studies showing no ill effects from aspartame and other artificial sweeteners, Dr. Schernhammer and colleagues looked through the records of more than 77,000 women and 47,000 men in their nurses and health professional’s studies.”

US Official: ‘Activate Your Science’
By Donna Laframboise

A senior public servant thinks scientists should be passionate, engaged activists.

A few weeks ago an official based in Washington, DC touched down in Australia – 16,000 kilometers distant. She then traveled another 2,400 kilometers north to an out-of-the-way city named Cairns. With the Great Barrier Reef as a backdrop, she proceeded to deliver one of the scariest speeches ever. The official’s name is Jane Lubchenco. As the Under Secretary of Commerce for the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), this woman heads a monstrous organization that spends $4 billion worth of taxpayers’ money each year. In other circumstances, I might be inspired by Lubchenco. She has a high-powered position in the reportedly excessively macho Obama administration. Moreover, her paternal grandfather (like my maternal grandparents) emigrated to North America from the Ukraine.

Instead, I’m appalled by the influence this woman now wields over a field I once respected and admired – science…..In Lubchenco’s universe there is apparently no danger of scientists going overboard, of unconsciously biasing their research. She seems to think that earning a scientific degree somehow transforms individuals into infallible beings who will never fall victim to self-delusion, whose judgment will always be impeccable.

Scientific Computer Modeling Method 101
By Roy Tucker

I'm a bit dismayed about how computer models have come to be more important than actual observations and so I offer a formal statement of the Scientific Computer Modeling Method.

Scientific Integrity is an Oxymoron

No matter what anyone says; you can’t marginalize the truth! You can suppress it; you can ignore it; you can avoid it; you can attempt to undermine it; you can attempt to subvert it; you can attempt to organize against it; you can even laugh at it - but if we have the courage and the fortitude to stand and confront the lies, irrespective of the personal costs, the truth will stand the test of time. The Other Scandal In Unhappy Valley
by Rand Simberg on July 13, 2012

So it turns out that Penn State has covered up wrongdoing by one of its employees to avoid bad publicity.

But I’m not talking about the appalling behavior uncovered this week by the Freeh report. No, I’m referring to another cover up and whitewash that occurred there two years ago, before we learned how rotten and corrupt the culture at the university was. But now that we know how bad it was, perhaps it’s time that we revisit the Michael Mann affair, particularly given how much we’ve also learned about his and others’ hockey-stick deceptions since. Mann could be said to be the Jerry Sandusky of climate science, except that instead of molesting children, he has molested and tortured data in the service of politicized science that could have dire economic consequences for the nation and planet.

To review, when the emails and computer models were leaked from the Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia two and a half years ago, many of the luminaries of the “climate science” community were shown to have been behaving in a most unscientific manner. Among them were Michael Mann, Professor of Meteorology at Penn State, whom the emails revealed had been engaging in data manipulation to keep the blade on his famous hockey-stick graph, which had become an icon for those determined to reduce human carbon emissions by any means necessary........

Editor's Note - please follow the link to see the whole impact what must be considered a massive level of corruption, at many levels, in American Universities. Currently I have an Education Watch link on the side which will be dealing with the failure of the public education system and why this failure exists. I will be adding a link dealing with the intellectual and moral corruption of American universities soon.

Scientific Integrity is an Oxymoron

"How can an otherwise sane individual become so enamored of a fantasy, an imposture, that even after it’s exposed in the bright light of day, he still clings to it – indeed, clings to it all the harder? No amount of logic can shatter a faith consciously based on a lie." ~ Lamar Keene, a scam artist who posed as a psychic, describing why it was so easy to fleece people.
Parkinson’s Researcher Fabricated Data – Neuroscientist Mona Thiruchelvam Agrees to reract two studies linking neurodegeneration to pesticides
By Hayley Dunning

Thiruchelvam fabricated stereological cell count data in two studies on how pesticides influence neuronal mechanisms involved in Parkinson’s disease (PD). The studies reported the results of 13 new experiments that supposedly counted nigrostriatal neurons in the brains of mice and rats, but an investigation spearheaded by the UMDNJ determined those counts were never taken. The nigrostriatal pathway is a major dopamine circuit in the brain, and loss of neurons in this area is one of the main features of Parkinson’s disease…… After the investigation was passed back to UMDNJ and the findings were confirmed, Thiruchelvam was notified and provided with an opportunity to respond. She never did, and in February 2010, she left the UMDNJ. The ORI sent her a Voluntary Exclusion Agreement, which excludes her from federal funding and serving on advisory committees for seven years, which she signed without comment.

Why Most Published Research Findings Are False
There is increasing concern that most current published research findings are false. The probability that a research claim is true may depend on study power and bias, the number of other studies on the same question, and, importantly, the ratio of true to no relationships among the relationships probed in each scientific field. In this framework, a research finding is less likely to be true when the studies conducted in a field are smaller; when effect sizes are smaller; when there is a greater number and lesser preselection of tested relationships; where there is greater flexibility in designs, definitions, outcomes, and analytical modes; when there is greater financial and other interest and prejudice; and when more teams are involved in a scientific field in chase of statistical significance. Simulations show that for most study designs and settings, it is more likely for a research claim to be false than true. Moreover, for many current scientific fields, claimed research findings may often be simply accurate measures of the prevailing bias. In this essay, I discuss the implications of these problems for the conduct and interpretation of research.

Scientific Intergrity is an Oxymoron: The UCLA Saga

Normally I get my daily update from the American Council on Science and Health containing a number of links to articles dealing with every conceivable health issue, and every scare monger public release from activists of every kind. Today was different. There was only one issue discussed. One that bears repeating over and over again! Is there a massive level of corruption in the universities? I believe the facts about Anthropogenic Climate Change has exposed the lies and hypocrisy of the scientific community, which has been a pattern repeated for decades. Was it there before? I believe this has been a problem for over fifty years...ever since the release of Silent Spring. That was the spear point for the corruption as it was the driving impetus for the creation of the EPA and eventually a host of unscientifically indefensible laws and regulations. It didn't happen overnight, but government grant money has made science rich. That made it politics. There can only be one answer. Universities must no longer be treated as sacred cows. The total elimination of government grant money to the universities will have a massive cleansing effect on all of them. Kind of like flushing the toilet!

In Academia: “Our Way or the Highway”
EDITOR'S NOTE: We often address light-hearted themes in Friday Dispatch. Today, however, we have the unpleasant task and mission of exposing a very serious issue. In fact, we’ve decided to devote today’s Dispatch to a single story, that of the unjust termination of Dr. James Enstrom from his research position of 34 years at UCLA, based on independent research that didn’t accord with the University’s ideological agenda. We think the story’s that important. Last August, we at ACSH were troubled to learn that esteemed scientist and ACSH trustee Dr. James Enstrom had been terminated from his research position in UCLA’s Department of Environmental Health Sciences following a secret faculty vote. After Enstrom’s 34 years of service to the university, what could have led the faculty to such a radical decision? …….ACSH’s Dr. Gilbert Ross finds UCLA’s decision to fire Dr. Enstrom reprehensible. “This is nothing more than vengeance against an iconoclastic thinker, based purely on a political agenda in the guise of scientific purity, waged against someone who has dared to step outside the party line,” he says. “And sadly, the damage to his stellar reputation is, at this point, substantial, and perhaps irreversible.”…..“Dr. Enstrom’s case is about more than a single individual; it’s about academic freedom, and how it has been imperilled.” …..Dr. Enstrom concludes, "I plan to overturn my wrongful termination from UCLA by continuing to educate Californians about the devastating consequences of politically corrupt science."

Scientific Integrity is an Oxymoron: The Oregon State University Saga Continues

Joanne Nova's blog is a must read every week. Today (since she is in Australia today is tomorrow) she published an e-mail that is an important part of a long saga involving Dr. Art Robinson, who is running for Congress, his children, his friends and others, and in this case another scientist who has fallen under the steamroller of the psuedo-pagan religious movement known as Global Warming.

I published some links about what has occurred to Robinsons children as a result of his run against Rep. DeFazio. I also published an article by my friend Paul Driessen entitled Political Payback - Oregon Style. This isn't isolated. Scientists have been booted out of their jobs .....or lost their grants....and then were booted out of their jobs for years in many areas over this issue...and it only goes one way. Religiously support Global Warming or suffer. Jo makes an important point here.

"Just post 3 examples of where upstanding scientists believing in man-made global warming were targeted and sacked because they spoke out at a university full of skeptics?"

Please make sure to follow the links listed above in order to establish what clearly appears to be a pattern of behavior by Oregon State University as your read on. I also recommend reading the comments from Jo’s readers in her article. Her readers are debaters of a higher caliber than is usually seen. RK
